The United Kingdom on Wednesday announced it will hold social media platforms accountable for harmful content for better protection of online users. 

Under the new plans, tech firms will be responsible for removing content that promotes violence, cyberbullying or child abuse.

Digital Secretary Nicky Morgan and Home Secretary Priti Patel announced the government is minded to appoint communications watchdog Ofcom as the regulator to enforce rules to make the internet a safer place.
